www.chinaview.cn 2005-05-03 19:57:12

NAIROBI, May 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Somali Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi escaped unhurt in a bomb explosion Tuesday when he was addressing a rally in the capital, building support for his exiled government, according to reports reaching here from Mogadishu.

The prime minister, Ali Mohamed Gedi, was not injured and was immediately rushed away from the scene, where it appeared at least 10 people were killed, the reports said.

The cause of the blast was not immediately clear. Hundreds of people had gathered in a soccer stadium to hear Gedi discussing plans to bring the government to Mogadishu.

Gedi arrived in Somalia on Friday for his first trip home sincehe took office.

Somalia has been without a central government since 1991, when clan-based warlords overthrew Mohamed Siad Barre and then involved in a domestic conflict.

The transitional government was formed in 2004 in Kenya, under the auspices of a regional bloc, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development, and the European Union. It has not been able to return to Mogadishu because of security fears. Enditem
