KABUL, May 2 (XinhuaÍø) -- Afghan National Police (ANP) captured six insurgents Monday morning while on a joint patrol with the US Army outside a small village in Afghanistan's southern province Kandahar.

"Today's incident is a perfect example of the ANP taking the lead in the fight for their nation's freedom and stability. What happened clearly shows that Afghan forces and the Afghan people are sending a clear message to the insurgents that violence and oppression will not be tolerated," said US Army Brigadier General James G. Champion, deputy commanding general of the Combined JointTask Force-76.

ANP forces were leading a patrol in the village with members ofthe US Army's 2nd Battalion and 3rd Infantry Regiment, when they were attacked by a group of insurgents. The police returned fire and captured six insurgents.

"Every day the Afghan National Police, Afghan National Army andthe Afghan Security Forces conduct operations that make Afghanistan safer and more secure," US officer added.

Afghan National Police and the 2nd Battalion are continuing their operation in the area to deny insurgent forces a safe haven.Enditem
