Car bomb blast hits US convoy in Baghdad

    BEIJING, May 2 --A car bomb blast detonated near a US military convoy in western Baghdad on Sunday, destroying a US Humvee and causing several casualtie.

    The attack took place on a road in the Jame'a district of western Baghdad, killing a child and wounding seven people.

    Earlier on Sunday, a suicide car bomb hit another US military convoy in southeastern Baghdad , killing four Iraqi civilians and wounding 12 others.

    Meanwhile, five policemen were killed when some 30 insurgents attacked the checkpoint close to a military college near the old Deyala bridge south of Baghdad.

    Insurgents have stepped up their attacks in and around Baghdad since the formation of the new Iraqi government on Thursday.
