CAIRO, April 30 (Xinhuanet) -- One person was killed and at leastseven including four foreigners were injured on Saturday afternoonas an explosion hit a square in downtown Cairo, witnesses and localmedia said.
Witnesses said one person threw a bomb from the Sixth of Octoberbridge over Abdel Moneim Riyadh square in downtown Cairo, killingan Egyptian citizen and wounding several others strolling then nearthe Ramases Hotel at the square which is a bustling shopping area.
But Egyptian television channel the Nile News reported that theexplosion appeared to be a suicide bombing attack and an Arab manwho is suspected to be the suicide bomber was killed in thepowerful blast.
Remains of a body, covered with newspapers, were seen beneaththe bridge. The explosion occurred at about 16:00 local time (1300GMT).
Egyptian Health Minister Mohammed Awad Tag Eddin told the NileNews TV channel that three Egyptians were injured along with twoIsraelis, one Swiss and one Italian.
Meanwhile, a source from the Israeli Embassy in Cairo confirmedto Xinhua that at least two Israeli tourists were injured in theattack.
The Nile News reported that the dead man was about 45 and from avillage of Giza governorate, south of Cairo.
Several ambulances were seen rushing to the scene and policehave cordoned off the area.
It was the second blast that rocked Cairo in some three weeks.On April 7, an explosion hit a Bazaar in downtown Cairo, killingfour people including three foreign tourists and injuring some 20others. Enditem |
