Fire leaves 10 dead, 19 injured

    SHANGHAI, April 29 (Xinhuanet) -- A blaze at a three-story building in downtown Shanghai claimed 10 lives and injured 19 other residents in early Friday morning, according to a source with the Shanghai Information Office.

    The fire occurred at 03:49 a.m. Friday in a brick-and-wood building on Gaoxiong Road in downtown Shanghai. Local police department dispatched more than 20 fire engines to extinguished itat the site of accident.

    Medical workers rushed the injured people to the Ruijin Hospital and the No. 9 People's Hospitals for the emergency treatment of the fire victims. Fire fighters quickly moved 17 liquefied natural gas cylinders out of the building, and they worked hard to put out the raging flames with high-pressure watercannons. The fire was eventually extinguished by 04:42 a.m .Friday.

    The building was an abandoned workshop rented to some migrants.

    Soon after the accident, officials of the relevant Shanghai municipal government departments hurried to the site to organize rescue operation and investigation.

    The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Enditem
