BEIJING, April 28 -- China is now applying to UNESCO to include the Mukamu music of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on the world intangible cultural heritage list.
The move follows the inclusion of China's Kunqu opera and ancient Chinese Guqin music on the list. "Mukamu" is a classical theme of Uygur music combining music, literature, dance and drama together. It is often called the encyclopedia and the living cultural relic representing the life of the Uygur people.
UNESCO began to assess masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity in 2001, and has already selected 47 masterpieces. Pieces are assessed on their artistic value, their scarcity, and preservation plan.
