NEW DELHI, April 26 (Xinhuanet) -- India has ratified the Convention on Nuclear Safety that commits participating states to maintain a high level of safety in the operation and regulation of nuclear power plants, an UN statement issued here said on Tuesday.
"The 10-year-old treaty, ratified by 56 states, is an international agreement that commits participating states to maintain a high level of safety in the operation and regulation ofnuclear power plants," the statement said.
India was among the 51 of 56 contracting nations that attended the latest two-week peer review meeting at the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) headquarters in Vienna last week.
"With India's ratification of the convention, all states with nuclear power plants are now participating in the convention," it added.
India has 14 nuclear reactors under operation and the state-owned Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) is constructing eight more reactors. Enditem
