Syria pulling out last forces from Lebanon
www.chinaview.cn 2005-04-24 18:33:31

BEIRUT, April 24 (Xinhuanet) -- The withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon will be completed on Sunday, reported the local Mahar (Day) newspaper, citing a Lebanese military official.

On Saturday night, Syrian troops left at least 10 checkpoints in the northern Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon, the largest batch of Syrian forces which withdrew from Lebanon since the pullout started on March 8, according to the official.

Dozens of trucks carrying hundreds of soldiers and armored vehicles towing cannons and rocket launchers were heading to al- Masnaa border crossing, said witnesses.

Syrian officials confirmed that the last Syrian forces in Lebanon's Bekaa valley began withdrawal on Sunday and were expected to complete the pullout by Monday.

An Information Ministry official, asking not to be named, told Xinhua that there will be a farewell ceremony in Bekaa as the troops leave and welcome activities on the Syrian side of the border when they return.

The move, earlier than planned, ended Syria's 29-year military presence in Lebanon in line with UN Resolution 1559.

Damascus has promised to complete the pullout by April 30 ahead of the Lebanese parliamentary elections scheduled for May. Enditem
