GENEVA, April 20 (Xinhuanet) -- All samples of a killer flu virus mistakenly sent worldwide by an institute in the United States have been found, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday.
All samples have now been destroyed except for one in Lebanon and a little portion in the United States, said Maria Cheng, spokeswoman for the United Nations health agency.
The sample that had gone missing in Lebanon was found at the airport of Beirut and would be destroyed soon, while those sent to Mexico and South Korea, which were also previously unaccounted for, have been destroyed, she told reporters here.
"There are still some laboratories in the United States that haven't confirmed the destruction of the samples they were sent," Cheng said, adding that 98 percent of the US samples had been destroyed.
The WHO has urged the destruction of the H2N2 flu virus in fearof an outbreak of a global pandemic should the virus be released out of labs. The virus killed between 1 million and 4 million people in Asia in 1957-58.
The samples of the virus were sent by the College of American Pathologists to 61 labs in 18 countries and areas as part of routine test kits. US labs received the vast majority of the 3,747 kits sent out in October and February. Enditem |
