WASHINGTON, April 20 (Xinhuanet) -- US President George W. Bush still backs John Bolton to be the next US ambassador to the UnitedNations even though the Senate Foreign Relations Committee postponed a vote on Tuesday, White House spokesman Scott Mc Clellansaid at a briefing on Wednesday.
"I think what you're seeing is some Democrats on the committee trumping up allegations and making unsubstantiated accusations against someone the president believes will do an outstanding job at the United Nations ... He (Bolton) is exactly the kind of person we need at the United Nations during this time of reform," McClellan said.
"He is someone who has been an effective manager, a strong diplomat who has gotten things done. And I think he's earned the respect of many people that he has worked with because of what he's done," McClellan said.
McClellan accused the Democrats of playing politics with Bolton's nomination and urged the Senate committee to quickly get him "in office."
The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday postponed a vote on John Bolton's nomination. The decision showed the Democrats in the committee successfully blocked the Republicans who sought to push Bolton through as the showdown vote was scheduled Tuesday.
Bolton, the under secretary of state in charge of arms control, has been a harsh critic of the United Nations bureaucracy and a provocative choice to be Washington's representative to the UnitedNations. Enditem |
