BEIJING, April 19 -- The UN Security Council has
voted unanimously to widen arms embargo in the Democratic Republic of Congo in
efforts to bring peace to this war-torn country.
The resolution noted "a climate of insecurity" contributed by armed groups and militias in the eastern part
of Congo, and widens the arms embargo "to any recipient" except to those
soldiers and police integrated into a national army.
The resolution also urged neighboring states
including Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda to ensure that their civilian and military
airports are not used to deliver illegal arms.
In July 2004, the council extended an arms embargo
for a year on foreign and Congolese armed groups and militias in eastern
provinces.
Continuous fighting has badly influenced the
elections due to be held on June 30. An independent electoral commission said
voting will likely be delayed until October or November because of unrest in the
east. Enditem
