Indian PM says redrawing borders impossible
www.chinaview.cn 2005-04-17 20:29:53

NEW DELHI, April 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here Sunday that redrawing borders in the disputed Kashmir region was something that was not possible, but he was in favor of bringing the people together.

Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran told reporters here after the talks between visiting Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Singh that the Indian prime minister conveyed the message to the Pakistani leader when the topic of disputed Kashmir came up for discussion.

Saran said that the prime minister said that he favored steps like increased transportation links between the line of control, trade across the border and more participation of people.

Musharraf, while stressing the importance of Kashmir issue, agreed that the confidence building measures between the two countries had made a lot of progress.

The Pakistani president agreed that such measures should be further continued and intensified, though they need not impose anytime-frame or deadline and the two sides should be addressing whatever the differences between the two countries, Saran said.

The foreign secretary said the mood of the summit meeting was very positive and forward-looking and the prime minister told Musharraf that he was prepared to travel towards a lasting peace between the two countries. Enditem
