HAVANA, April 14 (Xinhuanet) -- A UN soldier from the
Philippines was shot dead Thursday in a neighborhood of Haiti's capital
Port-au-Prince during a clash between UN troops and local gangs, UN officials
said.
The clash occurred when the UN troops prepared to set up an observation post at the entrance of a
slum, said reports reaching here.
The soldier was the third peacekeeper to be killed
during the year-old UN mission in Haiti.
The other two, one from Sri Lanka and one from Nepal,
were killed in March in two respective attacks by Haitians. The UN Security
Council has condemned "with the utmost firmness" the killing of the UN
personnel.
It also called on the transitional government of
Haiti to take immediate measures to bring to justice the perpetrators, sponsors
and authors of those attacks.
The 6,000-strong UN mission in Haiti was deployed
last year to help restore calm in the country after the ouster of former
President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Enditem |
