US to slash troops by 38,000 in Germany
www.chinaview.cn 2005-04-13 00:31:09

BERLIN, April 12 (Xinhuanet) -- The United States will move its military headquarters in Germany from Heidelberg to Wiesbaden and slash its troops by some 38,000, US army in Germany confirmed on Tuesday.

The German daily newspaper Stuttgarter Zeitung earlier reported "the headquarters of the land-based forces are to be moved from Heidelberg to Wiesbaden."

The report was confirmed by Elke Herberger, a US Army spokeswoman in Heidelberg where four of the eight US military headquarters are based.

Under the US plan, the US army troops in Europe are to be reduced from the current 62,000 to 24,000 in the next five to ten years while the main operating areas will be cut from 13 to just four.

The US had deployed more than 100,000 troops in Germany during the Cold War years and is cutting the number since the end of the war. Enditem
