JOHANNESBURG, April 11 (Xinhuanet) -- The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) resolved on Monday to send in May fact-finding missions to hot African spots of Cote d'Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
This is one of the 10 important resolution adopted at the end of the PAP's Third Ordinary Session, which was attended by 200 parliamentarians from most African countries on the continent.
PAP President Gertrude Mongella said at a press conference that the missions would assess current conditions in the two conflict ridden countries and report back to the PAP as soon as possible.
As representatives of the African people, she said, "We can notjust sit and watch. We also support African leaders to facilitate peace process on the continent."
The resolution calls upon the African Union (AU) to make every effort possible to resolve all the conflicts in Africa and calls upon all the parties involved in conflicts to cooperate with the African Union.
Among its other resolutions, adopted after a two-week session in Midrand, the PAP called on African countries who had not yet done so to ratify a continental peer review mechanism.
The parliament also recommended that the AU sought to speed up peace negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict in Sudan's western Darfur region.
It proposed that the AU's mandate be enhanced to include the protection of the people of Darfur.
The PAP recommended that the AU's Peace and Security Council start urgent consultations with the United Nations' Security Council to "facilitate complementarity in approaches" to the Darfur crisis. Enditem |
