STOCKHOLM, April 10 (Xinhuanet) -- The majority of Danes still back the EU constitutional treaty, but the number of voters saying they will vote no continues to grow, Ritzau news bureau reported on Sunday.
EU constitution supporters still are the majority among Danes, but those intending to vote no are gaining ground quickly, according to an opinion poll published by Green's Analysis Institute.
The poll of 1,229 potential voters showed the number of people indicating they were against the treaty rising to 27.6 percent. In March, the number of no voters stood at 24.4 percent. In February, the number was 22.3 percent.
Those indicating they would vote yes in the Sept. 27 plebiscite remained unchanged at 38 percent. Over a third of respondents, 34.4 percent, were undecided.
According to some politicians, the setting of a date for the country's referendum has forced Danes to take a stand on whether they support the constitution or not.
In a related story, Danish socialists founded a third EU-skeptical organization aimed at defeating the constitutional treaty.
The new organization, Challenge Europe, is against the constitution and what it sees as the EU's "neo-liberal" policies. Though founded in reaction to the constitutional referendum, the party plans to stay active in Denmark's EU debate after the vote is over.
Challenge Europe joins two other groups, New Agenda and Socialists Against the Treaty, as Denmark's newest anti-EU organizations. Enditem |
