Arab world rejects reforms imposed from outside
www.chinaview.cn 2005-04-11 04:51:53

CAIRO, April 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa said on Sunday that reforms in the Arab world should not be imposed from outside, stressing any change should be homegrown, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.

Moussa made the remarks while speaking of a recently-released UN report on the human development in the Arab world, which highlighted the "lack of democracy" in the region.

Moussa said the report contained points that "we differ with", especially pertaining to the political conditions in the Arab countries.

"The pan-Arab organization does not agree with many parts of the report, (entitled Towards Freedom in the Arab World), especially concerning reforms forced from outside", he said.

The Arabs "want dialogue, cooperation and discussions with foreign parties on reform," the AL chief added, warning that foreign interference in the field could destabilize the region." The report's criticism of the Arab world is unnecessarily antagonistic," Moussa said, noting that the Arab leaders had adopted a reform document at the Tunis Arab summit in 2004 to address issues of reform, development and modernization in the Arab world.

UN concerned officials have said the annual report on the human development in the Arab world are aimed at helping realize "a comprehensive Arab revival in the field of development." Enditem
