Six-way summit on Darfur in Egypt postponed
www.chinaview.cn 2005-04-11 03:09:59

CAIRO, April 10 (Xinhuanet) -- A summit meeting on Sudan's Darfur issue in Egyptian Red Sea resort Sharm el-Sheikh has postponed from April 20 to late April or sometime in May, Egypt's official MENA reported Sunday.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Geit revealed the delay Sunday, while submitting a report on arrangement for next week's summits in Sharm el-Sheikh, also including the 13th summit of the New partnership for Africa Development (NEPAD) and NEPAD's Peer Review Mechanism summit.

Abul Geit said the mini-summit on Darfur, that was supposed to be attended by leaders from Egypt, Chad, Libya, Nigeria, Gabon and Sudan, was postponed at the request of some the leaders who said they would have no time to go to Egypt next week because of they had other engagements.

The Darfur conflict erupted in February 2003 when rebels from the Sudan Liberation Army and the Movement of Equality and Justice took arms against the government.

The UN Security Council adopted last Thursday a resolution to refer alleged perpetrators of war crimes in Darfur to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

The Sudanese government on Sunday officially announced its rejection to Resolution 1593, saying the resolution "targets Sudan and its leadership." Enditem
