MEXICO CITY, April 9 (Xinhuanet) -- The director of Mexico's daily "La Opinion de Poza Rica" was shot dead in a road ambush in east Mexico, authorities said on Saturday.

Raul Gibs, 45, was traveling on a pick-up truck when he was shot by gunmen near Papantla, north of Veracruz, on Friday night, said the authorities.

The gunmen fled from the spot of the assassination, police said.

The Secretary of Government of Veracruz, Reynaldo Escobar, said that the newspaper director received four shots.

Authorities did not say whether the murder was a revenge for information that the newspaper published.

Las Opinion de Poza Rica is a leading daily in north Veracruz.

Veracruz state police are investigating the crime, but have not yet established the motive for the killing.

The shooting attack was the second one on Mexican journalists in a week. Enditem
