BEIJING, April 7 -- The South Korean parliament has set up a special committee to defend the Dokdo Islands, which will deal with Japan's new textbook.

    The chief responsibility for the 20-member committee is to safeguard South Korea's sovereignty over the Dokdo Islands, known as Takeshima in Japanese, ensure citizens' freedom to travel to the islands and publicize South Korea's stance on the dispute.

    The committee will visit Japan next Tuesday to meet Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura and Education Minister Nariaki Nakayama, to protest what they see as a distortion of history in Japan's revised school textbook, which claims Japanese sovereignty over the uninhabited islands.
