US to determine quotas on China's textile products

    WASHINGTON, April 4 (Xinhuanet) -- The Bush administration said Monday it would bring trade cases against China to determine whether quotas should be reimposed to protect textile and clothingmanufacturers against a surge in Chinese imports.

    The Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements, an interagency group chaired by the Department of Commerce, said it was initiating so-called safeguard proceedings on imports of certain Chinese origin textile and apparel products.

    "This decision is the first step in a process to determine whether the US market for these products is being disrupted and whether China is playing a role in that disruption," said CommerceSecretary Carlos Gutierrez in a statement announcing the action. Enditem
