BEIJING, April 5 -- Indonesian authorities say more
than 2,500 people were killed in last week's earthquake on the Indonesian island
of Nias.
More than 500 bodies have been recovered, while a
further two thousand people are missing and now presumed dead.
The assessment was made after a village-by-village
survey by the Indonesian armed forces.
Heavy lifting equipment is still being brought to the
island to lift rubble and debris from the scene of collapsed buildings.
