RAMALLAH, April 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Palestinian security sources said Monday that Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has ordered to disarm hundreds of militants wanted by Israel in two weeks.
The sources said Abbas has issued a presidential decree to set up two special committees in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and gave them two weeks' time to resolve the issue of about 530 militants wanted by Israel for alleged involvement in attacks on Israelis.
The decree said the wanted will be disarmed and recruited into the Palestinian National Authority's security forces and civilian departments, according to the sources.
It also clarified that the two committees are set up specially to address the issue of wanted Palestinians and will ensure a secure life for them after the disarmament.
The wanted will be compensated for the arms they turn in, added the sources.
Meanwhile, Abbas named on Sunday Nidal el-Assouri, a veteran security agent, as the interim national security chief to replace Hajj Ismail who resigned on Saturday after recent turmoil in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
Dozens of Palestinian gunmen fired at Abbas' compound late Wednesday night and then stormed nearby restaurants and destroyed some public properties. Enditem |
