A spokesman of the Meteorological and Geophysics Agency, Edison Gurning, said here that the epicenter of the earthquake was some 33 kilometers deep in the Indian Ocean, about 157 km south of Gunung Sitoli, the main town of Nias district.

"The tremor was also felt on Mentawai islands, Pariaman and Padang Panjang of West Sumatra province," he was quoted as saying by the official Antara news agency.

The small tremor caused panic among residents in Gunung Sitoli,as they were still traumatic with the 8.7 magnitude quake near themidnight of March 28 during which over 500 people have lost their lives.

Edison further said that more aftershocks would possibly strikeNias and surrounding areas in the future.

There have at least 21 aftershocks which had stricken Nias island since March 28 strike. Of the 21 aftershocks, five could befelt on the scale of intensity I-III of Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI), while the biggest one was a 6.2-magnitude tremor which happened at 10:00 local time on Sunday.
