Israeli, Palestinian officials hold secret meeting

RAMALLAH, April 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Well-informed Palestinian sources said Sunday that Israeli and Palestinian officials held last week a secret meeting in Jerusalem.

According to the sources, Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei, Minister of Civilian Affairs Mohammed Dahlan and chief negotiator Saeb Erekat participated in the meeting on Wednesday, together with Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres and Israeli minister without portfolio Haim Ramon.

The meeting focused on the issue of widening the plan of Israeli pullout from the Gaza Strip and northern West Bank to include more occupied Palestinian territories, the sources disclosed.

They added that the Palestinian officials had asked "to put an end to the Israeli and Jewish settlers' aggressive actions as well as the construction of the separation wall in the West Bank," saying "such actions in the West Bank would certainly obstruct the whole fragile peace process."

The meeting, according to the sources, also tackled the possibility of improving the daily life of the Palestinians under the tightened Israeli security measures implemented on roadblocks and crossings.

Other issues that had been discussed included the release of Palestinian prisoners and the case of the wanted Palestinian militants.

The Israeli side promised that the answers to the Palestinian demands would be brought up soon by the Israeli leaders in upcoming meetings held soon between the two sides, the sources added. Enditem
