Belgium extradites Madrid bomb suspect to Spain
www.chinaview.cn 2005-04-02 02:40:58

BRUSSELS, April 1 (Xinhuanet) -- The Belgian authorities have extradited a Moroccan national, who was accused of partaking in the Madrid bomb train attack last year, to Spain police, the Belgian news agency reported Friday.

Currently in Spanish police custody, the 28-year-old Yousself Belhadj had been arrested in Brussels on Feb. 1, 2005.

Madrid authorities accuse the Moroccan national of being the alQaeda spokesman who claimed responsibility for the morning rush-hour attack in which 191 people were killed.

Belhadj was first arrested in March 2004 because he was believed to be a member of the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group, but was released amid insufficient evidence.

A court in Brussels gave the final agreement to his extradition, after his appeal failed. Earlier this month, the Spanish authorities arrested another Moroccan man who had links to five suspects in the bombing, one of them being Belhadj. Enditem
