Sudanese government expresses sorrow over UN resolution 1591

KHARTOUM, March 30 (Xinhuanet) -- The Sudanese government Wednesday expressed sorrow over the UN Security Council resolution 1591 and described it as inappropriate.

In reaction to the US-drafted resolution, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that "it is not balanced" and it violated the sovereignty of Sudan.

"the Sudanese government is sorry to learn about this resolution in the time when the country is working to translate the peace agreement (ending conflict in southern Sudan) to reality," said the statement.

It added that the UN resolution would have negative impacts on the implementation of the peace deal signed in Nairobi in January.

The statement said the Sudanese government remained committed to exerting utmost efforts to realize peace across the country in spite of any obstacles to peace.

The statement also said the Sudanese government would work along with the regional and international community to lift any imposition of sanctions which was based on incorrect reports and injustice against Sudan.

The UN Security Council voted on Tuesday to apply a travel ban and asset freeze on those who committed war crimes in Sudan's western region of Darfur.

The resolution 1591, which passed 12-0 with abstentions from Russia, China and Algeria, is also aimed at strengthening an arms embargo on Sudan.

France is pushing for a separate vote to have Darfur war crime suspects tried in The Hague-based International Criminal Court.

The conflict in Darfur started in 2003 when two rebel groups took up arms against Khartoum accusing it of neglecting the western region. Enditem
