KHARTOUM, March 30 (Xinhuanet) -- A UN official said here Wednesday that a recent UN Security Council resolution is aimed to press the conflicting sides of Darfur to reach positive results. Spokeswoman for the UN special representative in Sudan Radia Achuri said the US-drafted Resolution 1591 is not aim at weakening the Sudanese government.
She hoped the resolution, which was adopted by the UN Security Council on Tuesday, would contribute to pushing forward for the resumption of peace talks to solve the Darfur crisis. Rounds of negotiations have been held in the Nigerian capital Abuja, but failed to hammer out a final peace settlement over the issue.
The UN Security Council voted on Tuesday to apply sanctions on those who committed atrocities in Darfur.
Resolution 1591, which was passed by 12-0 with abstentions from Russia, China and Algeria, also strengthened an arms embargo on Sudan.
In addition, a travel ban and an asset freeze will be imposed on those who hamper the peace process in Darfur.
France, another veto-wielding UN Security Council member, has introduced another resolution that will send those suspected of war crimes in Darfur to the the International Criminal Court based in The Hague.
But the Security Council members have remained deadlocked over where to try the perpetrators of atrocities.
Conflicts flared up in Darfur in early 2003 when two rebel groups took up arms against Khartoum accusing it of neglecting the arid western region. Enditem |
