BEIJING, March 29 (Xinhuanet)-- A powerful earthquake, measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale, hit the area off Sumatra of Indonesia at 00:09 (Beijing Time) on Tuesday, according to China's seismological network report.

    The epicenter of the quake is 97 degrees east longitude and 2.2degrees north latitude.
