NEW DELHI, March 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Indian officials at the National Disaster Management Division's control room at the Home Ministry said Monday night that no tsunami warning had been issued in India yet.
"We have information that the quake occurred at Sumatra and we are seeking information from the coastal areas of the country about any possible fallout," said an official at the control room.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Shivraj Patil had been briefed about the situation.
The US Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Centre website said the quake had its epicenter at northern Sumatra and occurred at 9.39 p.m. Indian time.
An earthquake in the same area on Dec. 26 last year triggered tsunamis that hit countries around the Indian Ocean, killing tens of thousands of people in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and other countries. Enditem |
