LONDON, March 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Former British Prime
Minister and Labor Party leader James Callaghan died at home Saturday, 11 days
ahead of his 93rd birthday, a family spokesman said.
He came to power in April, 1976 and was swept away by
Margaret Thatcher's Conservatives in May 1979.
Lord Callaghan was the unique holder of the four
major offices of state: Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Foreign
Secretary and Home Secretary. He was also the longest-living Prime Minister in
British history.
The family spokesman said Lord Callaghan died at home
in East Sussex, in southeast England.
