US, Russian foreign ministers discuss developments in Kyrgyzstan

    WASHINGTON, March 25 (Xinhuanet) -- A senior US official said Friday that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Russian Foreign Minister Gergei Lavrov discussed on Friday morning the developments in Kyrgyzstan, agreeing to help the Kyrgyz people through the political crisis.

    Rice and Lavrov "agreed on the importance of the international community working together to help the Kyrgyz people through this political situation, this political crisis," J. Adam Ereli, deputy spokesman for the Department of State, told reporters in a regular briefing.

    He said that the two foreign ministers also "agreed on the importance of the rule of law, nonviolence, and the support of the international community."

    On Thursday, Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev reportedly left his country for Kazakhstan after thousands of opposition supporters stormed government headquarters and occupied national TV station in the capital Bishkek. Enditem
