Mubarak's son says not seeking presidential nomination
www.chinaview.cn 2005-03-24 03:42:57

CAIRO, March 23 (Xinhuanet) -- Gamal Mubarak, the youngest son of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, denied Wednesday that he would be nominated for the coming presidential contest, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.

Gamal, head of the ruling National Democratic Party's policies committee, said the party has not nominated its candidate for this year's presidential election.

President Mubarak had said the time was not yet ripe for announcing the candidate and that the decision would be made at "the proper time," he added.

Egypt is due to hold its presidential election in September.President Mubarak has announced a proposal to amend the constitution to allow multiple candidates to compete for presidency.

Under the current political system, the president is not elected directly by the electorate. Instead, the parliament chooses a sole candidate first and then the only nominee is put to a referendum. Enditem
