Indonesian tried for Australian embassy bombing

JAKARTA, March 21 (Xinhuanet) -- An Indonesian militant was tried Monday at the South Jakarta District Court for transporting explosives used in the bomb attack in front of the Australian Embassy compound in Jakarta on Sept. 9 last year.

Agus Ahmad, the defendant, has confessed to transporting some 70 kilograms of high explosives from a boarding house in West Jakarta to his parents-in-law's house in Cianjur, near Jakarta, after police made a series of raids to nab militants in mid-July last year.

The explosives were then used to launch a suicide attack that killed 11 people, including the bomber, and injured some 150 others.

Prosecutor head Jaya Sakti indicted Agus with a sinister conspiracy that led to the act of terrorism.

He is also accused of providing shelters for other bombers and hiding information on terrorism.

If convicted, Agus could face a maximum sentence of death, JayaSakti told reporters after the court hearing.

Police have arrested five men in connection with the bombing, but the alleged masterminds, Malaysian nationals Noordin Moh Top and Azahari Husin, remain at large. Enditem
