Strong earthquake rocks Alor Island, Indonesia

    JAKARTA, March 21 (Xinhuanet) -- An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale rocked the eastern Indonesian island of Alor early Monday morning, but no casualty or damage has been reported,local meteorologist said here Monday.

    The quake took place at 01:15 local time, 49 km southwest to the Kalabahi Island near East Timor, said Amran from the Indonesian Meteorology Agency.

    The epicenter was 33 km under the sea, 7.8 degree south latitude and 124.7 degree east longitude, he added.

    Last November, dozens of people died across the Kalabahi Islandafter an earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale erupted nearby.

    Indonesia, an archipelagic and earthquake-prone country, is still recovering from the magnitude-9.0 earthquake on Dec. 26, 2004 that triggered deadly tsunami. More than 200,000 people died from the disaster in Indonesia alone. Enditem
