PARIS, March 17 (Xinhuanet) -- A slim majority of French people will vote against the EU Constitution in the referendum scheduled for May 29, an opinion poll showed on Thursday.
About 51 percent of the surveyed said they would reject the constitution if the referendum was held today, with 49 percent backing the treaty, according to the poll conducted by the CSA polling agency and published on the Le Parisien newspaper.
Also 53 percent of the surveyed said they will abstain, cast blank ballots or have not made up their minds on the treaty, showed the poll, conducted Wednesday and Thursday among a sample of 802 people over the age of 18.
The margin of error was not given, but polls of this size usually have a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
The constitution will become effective after it is passed by all the 25 member states of the European Union. Ten countries including France will decide the matter by a national referendum, while the rest 15 by parliament.
Hungary, Lithuania and Slovenia have ratify the treaty in parliament, and Spain approved it in a referendum last month. France will hold the referendum only three days before the Netherlands. Enditem |
