Islamic Jihad demands timetable for truce

CAIRO, March 16 (Xinhuanet) -- A leader of the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad (Holy War) said Wednesday the group demanded a timetable for truce with Israel, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.

"Islamic Jihad is insisting on setting a timetable for a truce,to be agreed upon between Palestinians and Israelis," Anwar Abu-Taha, a member of the political leadership of the group, was quoted as saying.

He acknowledged that an agreement on the timetable had not yet been realized among the leaders of Palestinian factions meeting in a satellite town west of Cairo.

The truce should also be conditional on Israel's halting aggressions in the occupied Palestinian territories, he added.   Representatives of 13 major Palestinian factions on Wednesday continued their meeting in Oct. 6 City, 20 km west of Cairo, to sort out their differences over a broad ceasefire with Israel and to achieve a unified Palestinian front toward peace talks with the Jewish state.

Palestinian officials said the meeting would probably end up with a declaration of a broad ceasefire with Israel.   However, militants said a formal ceasefire with Israel would not be free or unconditional, stressing any Palestinian peace move must be reciprocated by the Israeli side.  Enditem
