Pakistan rejects nuclear equipment purchase report

ISLAMABAD, March 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Pakistan on Wednesday rejected reports that it is trying to purchase nuclear equipment from the black market.

Responding to some western media reports about Pakistan's nuclear program alleging illegal procurement, Pakistani Foreign Office Spokesman said on Wednesday that the allegations carried by western media only reveal a tendentious motivation.

"As a responsible nuclear weapon state, Pakistan firmly adheres to the non-proliferation goals, even though it is not a party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)," the spokesman said.

He said Pakistan has also achieved excellence in the peaceful uses of nuclear technology.

"Pakistan will continue to work with members of the international community, both within and outside the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) framework as well as at the United Nations for promoting the goals of non-proliferation," he said.

Pakistan's credentials as a nuclear weapon state are well established, he said.

"The emphasis on nuclear non-proliferation, however, does not mean that we abandon the requirement of international cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear technology. The existing anomaliesin this regard need to be rectified," the spokesman said.

On its part, he said, Pakistan is ready to develop mutually beneficial cooperation with the nuclear suppliers group. Enditem
