Roundup: Overseas Chinese back anti-secession law

    BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese associations and overseasChinese across the world, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region,have voiced their firm support for China's adoption of the anti-secession law which aims to prevent Taiwan's secession from China.

    The National Association for Chinese Unification in Washington D.C., US, said the fact that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China has been widely recognized by countries across the world.

    The anti-secession law, adopted by the National People's Congress Monday with an overwhelming vote of 2,896 to zero, with two abstentions, is fair and reasonable, and reflects the common wishes of all Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots and overseas Chinese, the association said on Monday.

    The Society of Chinese Peace and Unity of Cambodia also expressed firm support for the law.

    A statement signed by the society's President Duong Chhiv said that the law set a legal framework to prevent Taiwan's secession from China and to promote peaceful national reunification.

    "We, Cambodian Chinese and overseas Chinese in Cambodia, fully support the law," it said. "We believe that the law will promote the relations across the Taiwan Straits moving toward a peaceful reunification, and it will also smash the attempt by the 'Taiwan independence' forces to split China."

    All Filipino-Chinese associations in Manila said in a joint statement that the law conforms with the interests of all the Taiwan compatriots.

    They also praised the law for encouraging exchanges between thetwo sides of the Taiwan Strait in the fields of economy, science, culture, education, health and sports, and for promoting the heritage and traditions of Chinese culture.

    Overseas Chinese associations and groups in Argentina, Venezuela and Colombia on Monday expressed support for the newly adopted law.

    "We firmly support the anti-secession law and will try our bestto cooperate with China's mainland to actively promote the development of relations across the Taiwan Straits and the peaceful reunification of China," said a joint statement issued inArgentina by 19 overseas Chinese associations, led by the Council for Promotion of Peaceful Reunification of China in Argentina.

    The law is a necessary and timely measure adopted by the National People's Congress at a time when the "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces become more rampant in alienating the island from China, the statement said.

    A statement issued by overseas Chinese groups in Colombia pointed out that the law is the most authoritative one for safeguarding China's peace and stability and the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

    Leaders of the Chinese community in Australia's largest city ofSydney also voiced their firm support to the law.

    Frank Chou, honorable chairman of the Australian Council for the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification of China (ACPPRC), said the new law will be conducive to stabilizing the tense situation across the Taiwan Straits and curbing the "Taiwan independence" secessionist force.

    He described the law as one that conforms to the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation and called upon the Taiwan authorities to give up the attempt towards "Taiwan independence" and work for the reunification of the motherland.

    Singapore and Chinese scholars, academicians, entrepreneurs andstudents on Tuesday expressed their firm support to the law.

    Speaking at a symposium on the law held in Singapore, a dozen of Chinese participants agreed that the formulation and adoption of this law is both necessary and timely.

    Embodying the common will of the Chinese people, the law servesas a milestone in China's peaceful reunification cause, they said,all wishing the early peaceful reunification of China.

    Overseas Chinese groups in Japan also voiced Tuesday their firmsupport for the law and China's position on the Taiwan issue.

    The anti-secession law is an epoch-making legislation which theoverseas Chinese in Japan steadfastly support, Chen Kunwang, honorary chairman of the Association of Overseas Chinese in Japan,said at a symposium held in Tokyo.

    He said the legislation is conducive to the peaceful reunification of China as well as to the containment of activitiesof the secessionist forces in Taiwan.

    More than 20 delegates of overseas Chinese living in Nepal Tuesday expressed their firm support to the adoption of the anti-secession law. Enditem
