BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhuanet) -- China's leading newspaper, the People's Daily, is to carry an editorial Tuesday, hailing the successful conclusion of the annual session of National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature.

;   The third session of the 10th National People's Congress (NPC) runs on March 5 through March 14. Nearly 3,000 deputies to the annual session heard and approved the government work report, the Anti-Secession Law and other import reports.

Describing the session as "truth-seeking and pragmatic," the editorial says that the session has made great achievements expected to promote the reforms, opening up and socialist modernization drive in China and stable development of relationship across the Taiwan Straits and China's peaceful reunification as well.

The session approved the resignation of Jiang Zemin from the chairmanship of the state Central Military Commission and elected Hu Jintao to succeed.

"Comrade Hu Jintao's succession as chairman of the state Central Military Commission is conducive to upholding the principle of the Party's absolute leadership over the military, and to the strengthening of the military, modernization and regularization process," according to the editorial.

The four-point guidelines on cross-Straits relations set forth by President Hu Jintao is significant in "safeguarding China's sovereignty and territorial integrity" and conforms to the "commonaspiration and will of the people and is in the fundamental interests of all 1.3 billion Chinese people including 23 million Taiwan compatriots," according to the editorial.
