BEIJING, Mar. 14 -- The Walt Disney Company's board of directors has named company president Robert Iger to succeed chief executive Michael Eisner, who last year announced his decision to retire.

The entertainment behemoth announced it was picking an internal executive to replace the long-serving Eisner who has reigned as the magic kingdom's CEO since 1984.

The 54-year-old Iger, who also holds the title of Disney's chief operating officer, was unanimously chosen to lead the company.

He will officially take on his new role on September 30.
