14 trapped S. African miners rescued

    JOHANNESBURG, March 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Fourteen of some 40 trapped South African miners at Stilfontein, 200 km southwest to Johannesburg, have been rescued Wednesday night, the South AfricanPress Association said.

    Twenty-six miners still remain trapped at 2.4 km underground following an earthquake shortly after 12:00 a.m. (1000 GMT) on Wednesday, it said.

    "They are alive and on their way out ... we are rather relievedto hear that and rescue efforts will continue," Mike Marriott, general manager of DRD Gold Limited that operates the quake-affected shaft, was quoted as saying. Enditem
