BEIJING, March 8 (Xinhuanet) -- A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said here Tuesday that the draft anti-secession law is "conducive to the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits andin the region."

At a regular press conference, spokesman Liu Jianchao said the draft Anti-Secession Law, now being deliberated at the National People's Congress (NPC) annual session, is aimed to safeguard the country's unity and the region's peace and stability.

It is to oppose and check the secessionist activities of the "Taiwan independence" forces and to preserve China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, he said.

"As long as it is under the one-China principle, we understand the wish of Taiwan people to have proper friendly exchanges with people of other countries," Liu said. The biggest condition for this, he said, is to "realize the country's peaceful reunificationas soon as possible."

Wang Zhaoguo, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, explained the draft Anti-Secession Law Tuesday at the session. Deputies to the NPC attending the session will deliberate the draft Anti-Secession Law and vote to ratify the Law on March 14. Enditem
