The Syrian troops in central Lebanon have begun redeployment hours after a meeting between leaders of the two countries.

Witnesses say up to 15 Syrian trucks, which carry equipment, ammunition, weapons, mattresses and personal belongings, are driving up the snaking highway through the mountains toward the Bekaa Valley.

There is no sign of any movement by the Syrian troops in northern Lebanon.

Earlier, Syrian President Bashar Assad met with his Lebanese counterpart, Emile Lahoud, to outline plans for shifting Syrian troops in northern and central Lebanon closer to the Syrian border by the end of March.

However, they were vague on the timing of a complete withdrawal from Lebanon.
