EU says Turkey fulfills important reforms
www.chinaview.cn 2005-03-08 06:06:45

ĦĦANKARA, March 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn, whose country currently holds the European Union (EU)'s rotating presidency, said here on Monday that Turkey has fulfilled "very important" reforms on the way of entry into the bloc.

Asselborn made the remarks after a high-level Turkey-EU meeting.

"Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul informed us about the amendments to Turkey's laws and these show that the reform process has no return, and relations between Turkey and the EU are deep," said Asselborn.

EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn, who also attended themeeting, said the EU attached great importance to the implementation of reforms in every place of Turkey.

The official also revealed that the EU would prepare framework documents in June or July and would announce the accession partnership accord within the scope of the progress report probablyin November.

He added that the EU's decision to open entry talks with Turkey in October has brought a momentum to the Cyprus issue, which will bring out new initiatives in the reunification of the island.

Cyprus has been split into the Greek-Cypriot south and the Turkish-Cypriot north since a failed coup incited by pro-Greece groups in 1974. The northern Turkish-Cypriot state is only recognized by Turkey.

Cyprus, already a member of the EU, has veto right that might block Turkey's entry into the 25-member EU.

Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said that Turkey's top priority is its relations with the EU and that Turkey would continue reforms, considered crucial to Ankara's joining the EU.

Monday's meeting is the first high-level talks between the two sides since the EU summit last December agreed on Oct. 3 as the date to open entry talks with Turkey. Enditem
