Archaeological treasure of indigenous culture stolen in Colombia
www.chinaview.cn 2005-03-06 12:01:03

BOGOTA, March 5 (Xinhuanet) -- The Colombian government said Saturday that 375 pieces of archaeological treasure of the Los Pastos Indigenous culture were stolen in Pupiales, province of Narino.

The robbery might lead to the loss of the title of Pupiales as the National Monument and Archaeological Reserve of Colombia, granted by the Colombian government on Aug. 26, 1972.

According to local authorities, the pieces, including gold jewelry and pottery of the Los Pastos culture, which are over 350 years old, were stolen from the Agrarian Bank where they were stored.

Pupiales Mayor Norberto Revelo said that the stealing was discovered this week.

Meanwhile, spokesman of Pupiales, Homero Rocero, said that the loss will "affect the roots of people."

The local government said that they will present the case to the Attorney General's office for investigation.

The treasury of Los Pastos was found in 1969 in the rural area of Miraflores, Pupiales. Enditem
