ROME, March 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Freed Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena was on her way back home Saturday after she was wounded by US troops earlier in the day in Iraq, the ANSA news agency reported.

She was able to continue her journey after being discharged from hospital. If the shooting proves to be the last episode ofher month-long ordeal, she is expected to arrive in Rome at about 10:30 a.m. (0930 GMT).

Kidnapped on Feb. 4, the war reporter for Il Manifesto daily was freed and handed over to three Italian agents on Friday. When the agents were driving her to airport, US soldiers at a checkpoint opened fire on her car, wounding her and killing an Italian agent.

US President George W. Bush had phoned Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to express his regret over the incident and pledged a full investigation into the shooting accident. Enditem
