WASHINGTON, March 3 (Xinhuanet) -- A poll released on Thursday found that while New Yorkers overwhelmingly support the city's efforts to attract the 2012 Olympics, a majority remain opposed tobuilding the 1.7 billion US dollars (1.29 billion euros) stadium necessary to lure the Summer Games.
The poll of New York voters, conducted by Quinnipiac University, also showed they wanted the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to get the highest price possible for the proposed stadium site above the rail yards in Manhattan.
TransGas Energy Systems LLC, an energy company, made a 700 million US dollars (532.5 million euros) bid for the site two weeks ago, topping the 600 million US dollars (456.48 million euros) offer made by Madison Square Garden. The New York Jets, theearly front-runner for the site and the proposed prime tenant, offered 100 million US dollars (76 million euros) for the development rights.
Asked if they supported the construction of a new stadium, 56 percent of New Yorkers said no, the survey showed. Another 35 percent supported the stadium, while the rest offered no opinion. In Manhattan, where the stadium would rise above the Hudson River,64 percent opposed the construction while 27 percent supported it.
Yet, when asked about hosting the Summer Games, 63 percent saidyes and just 30 percent said no.
Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,435 registered voters from Feb.22 to Tuesday. The poll had a margin of error of 2.6 percentage points. Enditem |
