MOMBASA, Kenya, March 3 (Xinhuanet) -- The World Trade Organization (WTO) mini-ministerial meeting in Kenyan coastal townMombasa is another crucial occasion to pay the way for a successful Doha round talks, officials said here Thursday.

"We set ourselves a commitment that we want the Doha round to be completed successfully next year. And for that to happen, we have medium and short-term goals. The short-term goal is that we must work toward a framework by this summer which contains progress and all the major issues in the Doha round. And on the basis of that, we want a basic consensus before the meeting going to Hong Kong," Kenyan Trade Minister Mukhisa Kituyi told a press conference ahead of the Mombasa meeting.

The meeting on Thursday afternoon will focus on the issue of non-agricultural market access and the delegates will try to come up with some concrete outcome, said Kituyi.

"Mombasa meeting is another crucial meeting, particularly because we face some technical issues that need political momentum. This is now another important occasion toward the sixth ministerial meeting in Hong Kong in December this year," said WTO Director General Supachai Panitchpakdi.

He called on all the WTO members to prepare for the Hong Kong meeting and contribute to the success of the Doha round talks.

Trade delegates from 32 WTO members, including the United States, the European Union, Brazil, India and South Korea, are gathering in Mombasa for a two-day meeting, which aims at break impasse in world trade talks.

Negotiations on agriculture, services and non-agricultural market access are the main focuses of the meeting, organizers said.

The meeting will take stock of progress on the Doha negotiations, evaluate decisions, inject political momentum to theWTO process and draw clear issues on the development agenda to be achieved at the next ministerial conference in Hong Kong, they added. Enditem
