LONDON, March 1 (Xinhuanet) -- More than 300 passengers escaped down
emergency chutes after a Pakistan International Airways flight caught fire at
Manchester Airport in northwestern England on Tuesday.
The Boeing 777 Flight PK789, carrying 340 passengers from Karachi, landed at
0903 GMT and was taxiing on the runway when a fire began in the undercarriage,
said an airport spokesman.
A small fire in the undercarriage was spotted and the plane stopped near
Terminal One where the airport's firefighters tackledthe blaze, according to
local media.
Police said a number of people were treated at the scene for minor
injuries.
"The Fire Brigade attended but there was no evidence that a fire actually
started, although it is believed overheating may have occurred in the
undercarriage," a Greater Manchester Police spokesman said.
"A small number of passengers were treated at the scene for minor
injuries," he added.
The flight was stopping at Manchester en route to Toronto, Canada, when the
emergency happened. The airport spokesman said passengers, who were unhurt, are
now waiting in transit for a replacement jet to Toronto. Enditem
